Troy outlasted Bethlehem 55-53 in a fixture that most local high school basketball followers expected to end with the culmination of two well coached teams clawing for every point.
Troy produced a last period surge as they ground out a victory versus Bethlehem 20-12 in the closing minutes. That run iced the game. Bethlehem seemed to have made a shot at the buzzer to win the game only to be wiped away due to a timeout taken with less than a second left in the contest.
Troy had great energy right from the tip off and started the game in style racing to a nice first quarter lead 17-7. They used an extraordinary defensive effort and grabbed control of the frame. Yet, Bethlehem regrouped in the second quarter and outscored Troy by 6 points.
The two squads struggled to grab a foothold as the teams went to the first half break with Troy nudging ahead.
The Eagles made a charge out of the break, in the wake of their first half deficit, which enabled them to commandeer the lead 41-35 heading towards the final frame.
Troy had a triplet in double figure scoring. Jakaiya Dewer paced Troy with 16 points. Nadia Brown netted 15 points. Jenalyse Alarcon dropped 14 points. In the process Jenalyse scored her 1000th career point. Makya Chapman finished with 8 points.
The Flying Horses manufactored 5 trifectas.
Troy shot with superb accuracy from the free throw line as they produced 66.7%, 16 of 24.
Maren Louridas led Bethlehem with 17 points. Julia Harvey secured 14 points. Ellie Cerf netted 6 points. Liz Mullen dropped 6 points. Lidia Boucher popped in 6 points.
The Eagles connected on 6 baskets from downtown.
